Happy Friday! And for those of us who are in the US, Happy Independence Day! Let me ask you this, have you ever got a disturbing call from your friend or family member telling you that they received a strange email from you which states that you are stranded in a foreign country and need help getting back, and asking for money? Well, it happened to our customer Molly, who realized that someone had somehow either hacked into her Yahoo email account, or gotten ahold of her contact list and started sending out scam emails in her name! Now Karen wants to know if she can resume using her email account, and if changing her password will be good enough?
As if receiving email spam isn’t annoying enough, now people are receiving scam emails from you. That’s got to be disturbing. Well, Molly, the good news is you aren’t alone, as members have said that they, too, have experienced the same thing.
If you read through the responses from our members, you’ll get a good idea of all the possibilities of how this happened. Most importantly, pay special attention to the members who offer advice on how to prevent this from happening in the future. There are many things within your control that can be resolved and prevented, like changing your password frequently. If you are replying or forwarding on an email, be sure to remove all email addresses listed in the content of the email to prevent spreading your friends’ and family members’ email addresses around the world. And tell them to do the same, so your email address isn’t exposed. You’ll also have to understand that even if you are careful in protecting yourself from such violations; sometimes things like this are beyond your control. All you can do is move forward, learn from it, and be vigilante on your part to fight the fight and remain proactive in protecting yourself.
If you have any additional advice to offer other than that listed, please share them with us. The more we knowledge we share the more we can all learn from it. Happy safe computing and thanks for your contributions!
